Raja Burger

by Edwan S. on Thu, May 15, 2014

A 'King' that tosses burgers into the air and makes wise-cracks sounds like a pretty awesome guy to hang out with. His tasty burgers are just the icing on the cake. But wait until you see what this particular burger dude drives. Seriously, it'll make you think twice about your career choice.

From pauper... to King!

If you to go to Raja Burger maybe, just maybe, you would just think to yourself: “Oh it’s just a regular dude, selling burgers.” Then let’s say you stick around until he closes… and then you see him drive off in a Merc SLK sports car. Next thing you know, you’re lying in bed, dreaming about owning a burger stall of your own.

We’ll get back to this point later.

Faizal first started his stall in Seksyen 19, Shah Alam near the train station before moving over to a better, more crowded area. Now he sells upwards of 300 burgers a night. Faizal also likes to put on a show: he can toss burgers high in the air and catch ‘em with his trusty spatula, and also performs ‘telur tarik’ from a ladder! His burger place is always fun, as he is more than happy to entertain his customers. In fact, he got the name Raja Burger because he once won ‘Raja Persembahan’ (King of Performers) in a burger cooking competition.

Faizal, the Raja Burger, doing what he does best: entertain with food.

If you’re here, try out his Monster Burger. It’s a big, hefty beast loaded with chilli sauce, mayonnaise and black pepper sauce and served on a sesame seed bun. The patty is well cooked, retaining a crispy crust even beneath the generous squirts of sauce. His Daging Special is pretty awesome too; Faizal splashes the egg onto his griddle and cooks it until the edges are crisp. Then he wraps the egg around the patties, again loaded with sauce and vegetables.

This is his Daging Special

His Burger Oblong is yummy. Tender and still juicy, the Oblong is in fact Faizal's personal favourite. But for something quite special, though, try his Benjo ‘Sup’. He gently cooks the eggs in molds, and seasons it with coriander leaf and secret spices to mimic the flavour of a soup. It’s savoury, messy and so very satisfying.

And here's the Benjo Sup... Yummy!

The prices here would surprise you. His burgers are as cheap as RM2.50! It’s like the 90s all over again.

Remember that sportscar? We’re not exaggerating here: Faizal, the Raja Burger, actually does drive a Mercedes sportscar. A car he proudly bought with cash. That’s how well a burger business can set you up. About two decades ago Faizal just had the usual cart. There was a point when he went through a rough time after an accident and had to endure 6 months of not being able to do anything. He couldn’t even pay rent. But he got back on his feet, and started not just selling burgers again, but also became a stockist for other burger sellers too. Suffice to say, he is doing well now. Very well, in fact.

“If people say that selling burgers means a bleak future… that’s just wrong. If someone says that to you, tell them to come see me. Tell them to come see the Raja Burger, and I will prove to them otherwise,” says Faizal. I’m inclined to agree. Selling burgers and driving sportscars? Come on, who doesn’t want that!

'Raja Burger' will be featured on 'BURGERNATION', an upcoming original show on the Friedchillies Food Network, Channel 838, HyppTV.
