Restoran Hainanese Chicken Rice

With over twenty years experience making chicken rice, this is the place for Halal Chinese chicken rice

by The Foodster Photography FriedChillies Mon, July 18, 2005
Chinese

This place has been selling Halal Chinese chicken rice for more than twenty years. The taste of the chicken rice reflects the experience that these people have in preparing the dish.

A well prepared and delicious chicken rice can be determined by four factors. Its rice, chilli, chicken and soya sauce. Get this four things right, and you get great chicken rice. Most stalls or restaurants we go to for chicken rice fail either one or two of these factors. Hainanese Chicken Rice passed all four brilliantly. Congratulations!

This place has two different chicken dishes. One roasted and the other steamed. Both chicken we tried were of a good grade. For the roasted one, the cook claims that the chicken is hung for four hours before roasting. This is done so that the chicken is completely dry before roasting. This results in a crispy skin. The steamed chicken shares the same praise. It is cooked just right so that the flavour of the chicken is still intact. When you overcook... you loose the flavour. When you undercook... you're eating raw chicken. Here they do it right.

The rice is also quite good. We suspect that they use a mixed version of fragrant rice which is very rare in chicken rice restaurants except those who take pride in preparing chicken rice. The chili is not too hot or acidic, slightly sweet and homemade.... just the way I like it. The soya sauce complements the chicken rice combination just right.

We also tried their homemade herbal tea and their barli and pako. Both are well made. Great food... great drinks.. what else can you ask for, eh? And it's reasonably priced too.

oops.. sorry they still do

Used to eat here before when I was studying in KDU. Tastes great and yes their Pako barli is worth having. This place if it still exists is worth the trip

Yes they do. There is construction near the area but they still operate.

I remember those days. Used to be under a big tree. I still preferred the big tree location rather than the sterile food court tho.
