So you're not a vegetarian but that should not stop you from eating at Sangeetha. They have good stuff here but it's the dessert department where they truly come up trumps. Not as sweet as your average Indian desserts, Sangeetha does theirs subtly, drawing out the hidden sweet tooth in you.
The thing about Indian sweets and desserts is that it’s incredibly sweet. It competes head to head with Arabic sweets for ‘Death by Sweetness’. Sweet, sweet, sweet and then a milky, spicy note that makes it slightly confounding for those who don't particularly appreciate things like cardamom in their desserts.
I am one of those people who love her curries and ghee laden breads but shy away from the psychedelic rows of temple hued desserts in Indian eateries. And then I met the kesari at Sangeetha. I've tried this before I found it a little weird, like it can't decide whether to be a pudding or a savoury snack. However... the kesari here is something else. It’s wonderfully subtle with a perfect balance of sweetness and spiciness. It looks like a clump of delicate fish roe with a texture of rice pudding but the moment you put that first spoonful in your mouth, the complex flavours will take you aback like a sudden beautiful face in a sea of people. Incidentally kesari is basically a semolina dessert cooked in ghee and coconut milk.
"Have a 'gulab split', kulfi, gulab jamun and everything nice"
They also excel at the other desserts. The gulab jamun here is of course syrupy and sweet but not achingly so and coupled with the kulfi (a sort of Indian gelato) makes this another dessert wonder. The kulfi is soft and creamy without an overpowering milk taste. If you really want to go down the sin route, have the what we term a 'gulab split', kulfi with gulab jamun, wafers, coloured jellies and sauces. This is delicious like something out of Willie Wonka's brain but it never fails to delight the child in you. Eat it with a friend though because there's a lot of it.
Sangeetha also has very, very good savouries. Delicious toseis, bathuras and purees with chutneys. The Sangeetha Special Thali is rice surrounded by little metal bowls of thairus, dhals, potato masala, rassam and various other vegetarian sauces and dishes and is good even for meat eaters. If you want a little bite in your meal order up the mushroom masala or the aloo gobi for substance. Make sure you end with a nice metal cup of masala tea where it comes with a tin bowl so you can 'tarik' it yourself. Wonderful. At lunch time too Sangeetha's offers a great value for money buffet on the top floor.
