The Cookie Cat

Happy Valentine’s Day to all our readers! For a special treat why don’t you take your loved ones out for something sweet? This cosy café with splashes of red and cutesy homemade charm is just the place for a budding romance to bloom.

This humble little café started off as a home baking business in 2008 with a booth set up on weekends at the Amcorp Mall flea market. Orders were also taken online and they churned out baked goods and delivered them to customers for special occasions. As their popularity grew, a dream became a reality, as they were able to open up their very own spot a mere year later.

Cookie Cat is a family business run by Zarina and her two daughters Azza and Li. Zarina is known as the single mom superwoman, Azza as the brownie expert and cookie monster, and Li as the taste-tester tech monkey. Zarina, a banker by profession, somehow always found time to bake in the evenings and on weekends for her friends and customers. She found it relaxed her eventhough her day job was tiring and highly demanding. Her passion for baking is what led them to open up a cosy and affordable cafe with a loyal following. The Cookie Cat was born out of their love of both cookies and cats, simple as that.

"Pure fudgy creaminess"

The one item I believe deserves special mention is the cream cheese brownie. This is the type of sinfully rich dessert that I don’t mind going to hell for. Moist doesn’t even begin to describe how this feels as it melts and spreads lusciously on your tongue when warm. It is a mixture of rich dark chocolate with just the right amount of cream cheese to give it the decadence that some brownies tend to miss. There are no bells and whistles here, no nuts or fillings, just pure fudgy creaminess.

All the baked goods are made onsite in the small kitchen area that houses two ovens. The daily hot meals however, are prepared at Zarina’s home and brought over. Due to the fact that this kitchen is not equipped to cook there is only one hot meal served per day. On Mondays you can indulge in a chicken soup or curry, on Tuesdays chomp down on beef moussaka, savour a juicy roast chicken on Thursdays and Sundays, on Fridays polish off some black pepper beef, and on Saturdays have your fill of korma.

The menu was designed with the area and people in mind. “I used to make local dishes like soto and nasi lemak, but I realised that many of my customers are Arab students that live around here and they didn’t like the local dishes so I added more meaty dishes to the menu. I also serve bigger portions because they eat a lot,” Zarina explains as she sets down two large plates of black pepper beef for us to enjoy with a side of butter rice. It was a generous serving of tender beef, potatoes, carrots, and onions swimming in a thick peppery gravy. One plate would have easily been enough for the two of us, but as we chomped down and proceeded to lick our plates clean we were happy to have the large serving.

Daily meals here can come as a set with a flavoured tea (lemon, peach, or blackcurrant) and chocolate chip cookie for a RM4 upgrade. With an additional upgrade you can choose from any of the other desserts that include a variety of cookies, brownies, and cupcakes. The chocolate chip cookie is a comfort that is best served warm with a glass of milk. The cupcakes are light and fluffy without too much icing. A pet peeve of mine is when a cupcake is all frosting and no cake.

If you are in the mood for something supremely decadent go for the blondie sundae. A blondie is a brownie that is made with white chocolate and peanutbutter. In sundae form, this comes topped with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, and crushed cookies. The nutty blondie pairs well with the creamy vanilla, especially when some of the ice cream has melted into it making it gooey and mushy.

It's no wonder that the treats at Cookie Cat are a hit as Zarina bakes them all with love. She listens to her customers and makes sure to keep them coming back, and come back they do.
