The Yogi Tree. The first thing that might pop up in your mind would be a Yogi meditating up in a tree. However, this perhaps is what The Yogi Tree aims to achieve, a serene blend of health food and at the same time pulling away from most local health food cliches. Hand in hand with their theme 'naturally good food' is the fact that most of the things on the menu are organic. From their vegetables to eggs, and even their meats are organic.
The atmosphere in The Yogi Tree is very relaxing as they have bright white based walls and tall windows that just puts you in a mood for food. The cosy chairs also adds to the chilled out ambience. What did strike our fancy was their 'Wall of Phrases' right at the back corner, next to the window. It was full of many inspiring health influenced words. The menu too have simple yet effective words, most of them spelling out the beautiful culinary delights on offer. Starting from the lighter dishes and then gradually moving up to the heavier stuff, we ordered accordingly from their scribbly menu! Yes, they do have arrows and scribbles all over the menu highlighting certain ingredients or benefits of each item.
The Healing Teas seem to be a hit here, especially their American Ginseng, Red Dates, Longan and Wolfberry tea. Although we ordered it out of curiosity, the real reason for ordering this drink is that it can reduce stress, lowers cholesterol and helps curb illnesses. Most of their drinks have healing properties. For those who prefer juices their Ginger Spice comprising of ginger, honey, yogurt, lemon juice and mint is very refreshing. You can also choose any variety or pick on the concoctions that meet your physical or epicurean needs.
"The lamb rack came, succulent with bits of fat still sizzling on it"
Before we sunk too deep into the wonderful delights of the drinks, a tantalising dish appeared at our table that looked like it was plucked from the lushest part of the jungle (or garden). The first thing that hit our senses was the sensuous depth of the balsamic vinegar doused with toasted sesame oil that enveloped the crisp luscious mesclun leaves. This was tossed together with the succulent pear slices and generous shreds of mouthwatering crispy well marinated duck, finished with delectable organic black sesame seeds. Sigh... need we say more?
As we were savouring the last bits of the salad and did not think it could get any better, Yogi Tree proved us wrong. The Tagliatelle Carbonara with salty bits of crispy beef bacon had a fresh sauce succulent from absorbing button mushrooms and creamy egg sauce. Best thing about this dish is that the delectable pasta is homemade daily and they really know how to serve it al dente.
But just like the real star of a show, the best is always saved for last. The lamb rack came, succulent with bits of fat still sizzling on it. The effect was so stunning, we just sat in awe for a moment and enjoyed the wafting scents. But by the next moment we had our knives tucked deeply into the juicy lamb. With each poke of the fork the clear juices of meaty pleasure seemed to burst out from every pore. What made it really delicious was how the juicy meat complimented the crispy herb crust and vice versa. Stepping this up to a whole new level was the sauce, a reduction of lamb juice and their own recipe. Personally though, the sauce was not quite needed as it was good on its own. The roughly mashed potatoes with rare cooked green vegetables accompanied the lamb well, and were tasty enough to hold their own.
Though we had quite a feast already, taking a glimpse into the dessert menu still whet our appetites. Their scones are apparently quite famous within health food circles. However what makes the desserts here stand out further than the rest is that they use natural unbleached flour giving a unique and richer taste to all their pastries and desserts. For those who prefer wining and dining, they also provide a list of red and whites and even champagne to go with your meals. If you feel a little porkish after such a lavish dinner, the attached Yoga Boutique provides an array of equipment to help burn off those calories. Eat – Drink – Breathe!
