Damn Addictive Thai Salt Crusted BBQ Talapia
Veg Fish Farm Thai – hands down is one of the best pork free authentic Thai restaurant near KL. Fresh seafood, home grown vegetables and great ambiance, it had me at Sawadeekap!
Thailand is a lot closer than you think...

Great seafood selection for a good price.
Music at night is a bit loud
Veg Fish Farm Thai Restaurant is located on a remote hill in Bukit Ampang, surrounded by nature, a farm and a fish pond. Honestly every time I come here (it's been at least 10 times) I feel like I'm on holiday in Thailand.
The restaurant is on stilts by a pond.
They have a huge menu selection which takes you a while to read through and you have to restrain yourself not to over order. The prices are very reasonable, the gluttony in all of us will want a little bit of everything. Their website is not updated regularly so prices might be inaccurate on there.
For first timers, I would recommend you to order classic dishes like Thai Fishcakes, Tomyum, Som Tam and BBQ fish. Stick to the Thai dishes because that's what they excel at, although the Chinese dishes are pretty good too. Fishcakes are homemade, priced only RM12 for 8 pieces and they are super tasty! It's springy and addictive.
A good pot of Tom Yum loaded with seafood
Red Seafood Tomyum is RM40 for 4 – 5 people and it is loaded with prawns, clams and squid. Not the small pathetic-sized seafood type by the way. They are good sized and fresh. The soup makes your face pucker up and you’ll think.. oooohhh.. That’s a good bowl of Tomyum!
There is a large BBQ pit on the way in you can’t miss it. I’ve seen crabs, prawns, lamb and cockles grilling away and the Salt Crusted BBQ Tilapia is a must try. Only RM4.60 for 100g, is it a good deal. Peel off the salt-crusted skin and enjoy the juicy and succulent flesh within. Also, it is stuffed with aromatics like lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves, which gives it a fragrant aroma. It is served with a homemade dip that just blows me away every-single-time. BBQ prawns are pretty good too.
BBQ Tilapia is a must try! But sometimes it takes a while to cook when they are busy, so do check with your waiter when you order
The salads are fresh, tangy, zingy and vibrant. I like it all. But unfortunately this last visit, the nuts in the Som Tam was a bit stale so it kind of ruined the salad. They grow their own vegetables at the farm next to the car park. I have not had a bad plate of veggies here. The smallest plate of Garlic Stir Fry Spinach was only RM10 but you get a nice pile of it. So nicely cooked, I can eat this EVERYDAY.
Fresh spinach fresh from the farm
There is a selection of desserts to finish off your meal. The puddings are OK but must tries are ice cold Tab Tib Krob and Mango Sticky Rice. I could not shut up about the Mango Sticky Rice for a week after I first tried it. Rich, coconut-y glutinous rice and beautifully ripened mango imported from Thailand. Tab Tim Krob (Red Rubies) at only RM5, is a perfect dessert to cleanse your palette and cool you down after the meal.
Tab Tim Krob, a.k.a red rubies, served on shaved ice, coconut milk and jackfruit is perfect for a makan session with calming view like this. See what you at right at the entrance; Fresh Tilapia aquarium.
Other things I have tried and really enjoyed – Seafood Fried Rice, Butter Prawns, BBQ Prawns, Steamed Siakap, Crab With Egg & Lala Steamed in Thai Sauce. Wash it all down with a refreshing glass of Asam Boi Juice.
You must come here at least twice. Once during the day time and once at night so you can enjoy the different ambience. The lake is filled with fish which are their pets. You can feed the fish with pallets sold for only RM2. Day time ambiance is peaceful and relaxing, night time is busy and lively with Thai music playing in the background.
Some of these guys are HUGE
Just use Google Maps to locate this restaurant. Day or night, you really can’t miss the BIG signboard at the side of the road. Follow the red arrows downhill and enjoy the slight bumpy road down to the restaurant. If your car is lowered, I suggest you drive down slowly.
Spot the vegetable farm behind the car park
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
